…Says EFCC rising to its responsibilities
The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has commended the anti-corruption stance of Muhammadu Buhari’s stance, noting that it has emboldened the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) to be alive to its duties.
This was contained in a statement signed by Agbo Gilbert Major, national secretary of the party.
“NNPP appreciates the efforts of the new leadership in the country in taking the country to a new height of hope for the common man, and we do agree that slow and steady shall win the race. There is no doubt that the expectations are very high but we must take it easy equally to avoid unnecessary mistakes. The much expected change in Nigeria has to do with our concern for patriotism, observing the rule of law and enforcement of government rules and regulations. The issue of security is a collective responsibility but government must be in the forefront in line with the provision of the Constitution which tasks the government on protection of lives and property of the Nigerian people through good governance,” NNPP said.
According to the party, “Nigerians are well disposed to the resurgence in the activities of the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) operatives who seem to have received a new vigour in carrying out their main function of dealing with matters of financial crimes, no matter who is involved.
“We are therefore, calling on Mr. President to continue to support the leadership of these government agencies as well as other parasatals, both morally and in any other forms. We also wish to draw the attention of Mr. President to the benefits of continuity and that it is not ideal to change a winning team.
“Consequently we call on Mr. President, for the reason of sustaining the ongoing tempo in the enforcement units of government institutions, there may be the need to tarry a while in the alleged desire to effect changes in the leadership of these government agencies for atleast one year to observe their new vigour and state before making changes except it becomes very necessary to do so.”
The party also said it noted with great admiration and satisfaction, the sustained efforts of the leadership of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) to right the wrongs of impunity in Nigeria.
“We believe these efforts should be commended by every well-meaning Nigerian as they are pregnant with a lot positive benefits for our great country. It is noteworthy that these sustained anti-impunity actions of the NCS are coming as a clear departure from the past as we were witnesses to the era of impunity and unwholesome monopoly of mafia groups and individuals on matters of breaches of Customs laws as well as import and export regulations in Nigeria,” it further stated.
“We are specifically pleased with the efforts of the anti-smuggling unit of the Nigeria Customs Service in Kano, Jibiya Border among other places, and the sealing off of warehouses in Lagos as a holding bay for uncustomed rice importations.
“It is our belief that when the leader of a country is weak and not transparent over state affairs, it trickles down to the subordinates and the society in general.
The various leaderships of the government agencies therefore, seem to have taken a cue from the new leadership in the country to carry out their statutory duties effectively without fear or favour,” the party said.
